PROBLEM ANALYSIS OF THE MANGROVE REHABILITATION IN NORTH JAVA COAST
Indonesia has a wide mangrove forest: 2.4 million ha is in danger. Furthermore, Java island has 81.439 ha of the mangrove forest (3.4% of Indonesia mangrove width). The latter is more threatened by local community. Mangrove Rehabilitation Development Center of Stiper Agricultural University has been conducting the mangrove rehabilitation in north Java coast. The goals of the Project were (1) to recover the degraded mangrove areas, (2) to provide the favorable mangrove rehabilitation models for the site-specific, (3) to conduct the mangrove research to establish the model, (4) to increase the local community involvement in mangrove rehabilitation. To encourage the community participation, the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) was used. The planting method used was the direct planting by Rhizopora mucronata species propagation, which had been planted with 2 x 1 spacing, tied in bamboo stake. The result of our project were (1) 20 ha of the mangrove forest in Pemalang Regency,(2) the various sylvofishery models have been proposed in Pemalang regency in 20 ha mangrove area, (3)the increased research on mangrove, and (4) the local community training on mangrove. The success of the mangrove rehabilitation in north Java coast was more strongly dependant on the social and cultural than silviculture technique itself.
